The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out a facial recognition feature linked to Aadhaar, aiming to streamline Know Your Customer (KYC) verification. The update integrates face authentication into the UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app.
As outlined in a circular issued by EPFO, the initiative replaces conventional biometric processes with Aadhaar-based face scans. The updated UMANG app now includes three additional functions powered by this technology, making the KYC process fully digital and accessible via smartphones.
Users must first install the Aadhaar Face RD and UMANG apps through the Play Store. Following installation, individuals can self-activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) without needing assistance from employers or EPFO officials.
This development significantly supports retirees, the elderly, and people with disabilities who face obstacles in traditional biometric verification. Physical visits to EPFO offices are no longer necessary for these individuals. Facial recognition offers a viable alternative for those in remote areas where fingerprint scanners or other biometric devices may not be readily available.
The verification system also benefits users with deteriorated fingerprint quality due to age or medical conditions. Those who are unable to travel or provide biometric inputs due to health concerns can now complete KYC using only a smartphone.
To initiate UAN activation through UMANG:
1. Launch the UMANG app.
2. Navigate to 'UAN Allotment and Activation'.
3. Enter Aadhaar and mobile numbers.
4. Consent to Aadhaar verification by selecting the checkbox.
5. Tap 'Send OTP' and input the received code.
6. If prompted, download the Aadhaar Face RD App.
7. If no UAN is detected, proceed with face authentication.
8. Upon successful authentication, the system generates the UAN and delivers it via SMS.
EPFO is leveraging Aadhaar Face Authentication, developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), to simplify identity verification. This face-matching system eliminates the need for fingerprints or iris scans, using a smartphone or webcam to match an individual's facial image with their Aadhaar data.
